January'sCharacter Trait: Availability

January’s character trait of availability reflects the community service aspect of our 4-H program.  Availability can be defined as making your own schedule and priorities secondary to the wishes of those you serve.  Community service certainly fits this definition.

Teach availability instead of self-centeredness.  Too often people think “what’s in it for me?” rather than “how can I help others?”

The five keys to availability are:
  • Putting others ahead of ourselves.
  • Finding a way to help, not to hide.
  • Being ready when called to help.
  • Being glad for the chance to serve others.
  • Checking with the right people before making commitments.
What type of community service project does your club undertake?  Do you adopt a family around the holidays, visit assisted living facilities, do road side clean up, make blankets for babies, volunteer at the animal shelter or something else?

Each club should plan at least one community service activity throughout the year.  Have club members brainstorm ideas and then choose one or two projects.

Let’s teach our 4-H club members the importance of giving back to the community.

Together we can do great things.

Ohio 4-H Age Requirements

As I read club announcements in the local  newspapers, I’m still finding that some 4-H clubs are using the old age guidelines when recruiting new members.

When recruiting 4-H members for 2008, please remember the following:
Eligibility for 4-H membership begins when a child has reached age 5 and is enrolled in   kindergarten, as of January 1 of the current year (Cloverbuds); project membership begins when a child is at least 8 and enrolled in third grade, as of January 1 of the current year.  Ohio 4-H membership ends December 31 of the year in which an individual attains the age of 19.

Contact our office if you have questions regarding the age criteria.

A Weather Reminder

Just a reminder about our meeting policy during inclement weather:  If Greenville City Schools are closed due to winter weather conditions, any meetings that Rhonda has scheduled at OSU Extension, Darke County, will not be held.  Examples: Jr. Fairboard, 4-H Committee, counselor meetings, Goat Committee, Horse Committee, Advisor Updates, Advisor Trainings, etc.

We will also attempt to have WTGR announce any weather related closings on their station, at 97.5FM.

Use your own judgment when deciding  whether or not to attend.  I know that weather conditions may vary from one end of the county to the other.

Mandatory Advisor Updates

Starting in 2007, we offered mandatory advisor updates for the organizational advisors of each club.  Other advisors and 4-H members are also invited to attend.  Response was very positive, so these sessions will be offered again in 2008.

Dates and times are as follows:
•    January 15, 7:00pm
•    January 22, 7:00pm
•    January 26, 10:00am
•    February 21, 7:00pm
•    March 18, 7:00pm

All clubs must send at least one advisor to one of these updates.  All meetings will be held at OSU Extension, Darke County.

Pre-registration is required to due space limitations.  Registration deadline is one week prior to each session.  Don’t automatically assume you can just “show up.”  Please call and register as soon as possible.

The Ohio 4-H Volunteer Conference and Bob Evans Recognition Luncheon will be held Saturday, March 8, 2008, at the Columbus Convention Center.

In the past we have sent conference information to all 4-H volunteers.  Due to budget restrictions, we can no longer afford to do so.  However, if you would like a copy of the conference information, contact our office.  We will be happy to send information to those who request us to do so.

Registration forms, along with your $30.00 deposit, must be submitted to our office no later than Wednesday, February 13, 2008, at 4:30pm.
Your $30.00 deposit will be returned once you have attended the conference.  Registration fees for those who attend conference will be paid by the 4-H Committee.  The earlier you register, the more likely you will receive your requested sessions.
