June's Character Trait: Joyfulness
Joyfulness can be defined as maintaining a good attitude, even
when faced with unpleasant conditions.
Summertime brings many different types of 4-H events which involve competition.
Everyone wants to win, but, in reality, not everyone can. Sometimes
it is hard to be gracious to others when we are disappointed. But learning
to see the positive in any situation can go a long way in helping us to maintain
a good attitude.
Being joyful means:
• Looking for the good in all things.
• Smiling at adversity
• Not giving in to discouragement.
• Not allowing emotions to rule our minds.
• Taking time out of each day to enjoy life.
The most important thing is to be able to say “I did my best” and “I have
learned a lot about myself.”

Project Related Information
If you have not ordered/picked up your project books, please do
so as soon as possible. The publications center at OSU typically closes
for two weeks in June to do inventory, and we are unable to obtain project
materials during that time. Order your books now to ensure that your
members will have them for the summer months.
Orders may be mailed, faxed (937.547.6491), or emailed. Please allow ample time
for us to prepare your order. Because of space and budget restrictions,
we no longer keep a large inventory of books on hand.
Books must be paid for when picked-up. We are unable to extend credit,
but will provide you with a receipt.
Remember: 4-H projects cannot be something that was completed as a project
for school, Bible School, scouts, etc. Each 4-H project must be the
original work of the 4-H member.
Junior Fair Swine Tattooing
Swine tagging will be held at the fairgrounds on Friday, June
6, from 4:00pm-7:00pm, and on Saturday, June 7, from 8:00am-10:00am.
Tagging will take place in the cattle show arena. Hogs must be castrated
at the time of tattooing
Any exhibitor planning to exhibit market hogs at the 2008 fair must have
their animal tagged. Cost is $2.00 per head.
New this year: the market barrow show will be divided by purebred as
well as crossbred classes (like the Ohio State Fair). You must declare
your hog’s breed at tattooing. Registration papers showing proof of
breed will need to be presented at the fair weigh-in.
Contact a member of the Jr. Fair Swine Committee for additional information.
Ohio State Fair Livestock
Entry Forms
Jr. Fair Livestock entries for the Ohio State Fair must be postmarked
by June 20. All 4-H livestock entries for the state fair must be signed
by me. I will be out of the office for Horse Camp June 11-13, so plan
accordingly. Don’t wait until the last minute to have your entries
signed.
In order to register for state fair livestock classes, you must be enrolled
in that project at the county level. For example, if you are planning
to exhibit swine breeding stock at the state level, then your 4-H enrollment
form must have the swine breeding project listed.
Rules, regulations and entry forms for the state fair may be found online.
Our office is unable to provide copies of this information due to budget
restrictions.
Fair Entry Packets and Information
Fair packets and entry forms are now available from our office.
Organizational advisors, or someone to whom they delegate this responsibility,
may pick up information for your club.
Entry forms will also be available on our web site.
Please check each form to verify the entry deadline. NO LATE ENTRIES
WILL BE ACCEPTED.
Also, advisors should verify that each exhibitor has completed their Quality
Assurance and skillathon requirements prior to submitting their fair entries.

Send Your Thank You Notes
Request letters
for sponsorship for our 2008 trophies have been sent from the Jr. Fairboard
to last year’s donors.
This year, more than ever, we are having a significant number of previous
donors decline to continue their sponsorship, due to not receiving thank
you notes for past sponsorships.
One advisor told me “I just can’t keep dinging the kids to send thank you
notes.” I argue that, yes, you can, and you should. It doesn’t
take that long to sit down and simply write “Thank you for your sponsorship.
I really appreciate it.”
Perhaps part of your first “after the fair” meeting should be spent writing
thank you notes.
