Congratulations, Neal!

Please join me in congratulating Neal Eikenberry for winning the National 4-H Electricity Qualifier in September.  This is Neal’s second national title.  He won last year’s computer qualifier.

Neal won the state competition during the Ohio State Fair, which enabled him to compete at the national level.

Competition was held at Purdue University in September.  Neal traveled with the Ohio team to the event.  While there he also had the opportunity to participate in educational field trips at Purdue and in Indianapolis.

All together, Ohio participants won four contests at nationals.

Neal is an active member of the Genesis   4-H Club and also a Junior Fairboard member.  He participates in numerous school activities at Greenville High School and plans a career in computer electrical engineering.

Neal is the son of Vern and Deanna Eikenberry.
Congratulations, Neal!  We’re proud of you!

November's Character Trait: Determination

Determination is defined as purposing to accomplish right goals at the right time, regardless of the opposition.

To achieve the trait of determination, one must:
• Set goals.
• Make sure goals are right.
• Ignore distractions.
• Not be discouraged by others.
• Face problems head-on.

Thomas Edison once said, “Genius is 2 percent inspiration, 98 percent perspiration.”

Information for this article was taken from Achieving True Success.

4-H Membership Age Requirement

As you begin recruiting 4-H members for 2008, keep the following age requirements in mind:

Eligibility for 4-H membership begins when a child has reached age 5 and is enrolled in kindergarten as of January 1 of the current year (Cloverbuds); membership to the upper level 4-H program begins when a child is at least 8 and enrolled in 3rd grade as of January 1 of the current year.  Ohio  4-H membership ends December 31 of the year in which an individual attains the age of 19.

Cloverbud membership counts towards an individual’s total years of 4-H membership.  In just a few years we will have 12, 13 and 14 year 4-H members!

If you, or someone you know, donates to the United Way, please consider designating your donation to be given to the Darke County 4-H program.  All you need to do is put “Darke County  4-H” on the designation line of the pledge form.

Thank You Notes

If you received a trophy or special award or sold an animal through one of the livestock auctions, send a thank you note to your sponsor or buyer.

Ads in the newspaper or signs above stalls/pens at the fair are great, but they should not be considered as a replacement for taking the time to write a personal note.

I hope YOU won’t be the reason a sponsor ends his or her relationship with 4-H or Junior Fair.

Take time to let the community know how much we value and appreciate their support.

A Note From State Representative Jim Zehringer

Dear Darke County 4-H Participants:

It is my great pleasure to be able to congratulate each and every one of you for your 4-H participation.  4-H is an extraordinary program and your dedication to leadership, citizenship and life skills are a testament to all Ohioans.

I wanted to also take a moment to congratulate those students who were selected to go to the state competition.  It is indeed a sincere honor for me to see so many students from our area competing in the state 4-H program.  I would also especially like to recognize Neal Eikenberry for being chosen two years in a row to attend the national competition.  Best wishes to you Neal as you compete again on the national level.

Again, congratulations to everyone for your successful participation and achievements in the 4-H program.

Sincerely,
Jim Zehringer
